Coming soon: Webinar on sow nutrition and production strategies

Sows have become increasingly more prolific, which asks for a more sophisticated strategy with regard to nutrition and production. This topic is key in a webinar that will be hosted by sister platform Pig Progress on 2 October 2025.

The webinar will be held in cooperation with animal nutrition company Novus International and will encompass a presentation of a new book, ‘Nutrition and production strategies for today’s sows’. The chapter on calcium and phosphorus needs of gilts and sows has already been summarised by Pig Progress

The webinar, titled Nutrition and production strategies for today’s sows: Expert insights for performance and efficiency, will feature various well-known speakers.

Dr Carlo Lasagna

The first speaker is Dr Carlo Lasagna, a veterinarian and pork chain manager at the Italian integrated pig producer Martini in Ravenna province. With decades of experience in swine production systems, animal nutrition, and management strategies, he has participated in numerous national and international initiatives focused on optimising efficiency and profitability in modern pig farming. He will delve into the background of the reason for publishing the new book and discuss key challenges in modern sow production.

Prof Dr Hans Stein

The next speaker is Prof Dr Hans H. Stein, attached to the University of Illinois in the United States. His name barely needs an introduction – he is a globally recognised expert in monogastric nutrition and mineral metabolism. He leads pioneering research on nutrient requirements, digestibility and practical feeding strategies for pigs. His work has helped shape modern feeding programmes designed to improve performance, animal welfare and production efficiency. His topic will – just like the abovementioned chapter – zoom in on calcium and phosphorus, and how these components form the foundation for lifetime sow performance.

Prof Dr Bruno Silva

And the final speaker is Prof Dr Bruno Silva, a leading authority on swine nutrition and environmental adaptation. He is a professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Brazil and coordinates the NEPSUI research group. His research focuses on precision nutrition and strategies to mitigate heat stress, combining animal performance and efficiency goals. He will focus on managing heat stress through nutrition.
