Advancing protection against mycotoxins: from research to results

For more than 30 years, Alltech has been at the forefront of mycotoxin research. Today, they are proud to introduce the next evolution of in-feed mycotoxin mitigation: Mycosorb A+ Evo and Mycosorb Evo.

These patent-pending solutions represent a major leap forward in feed safety, combining decades of science with cutting-edge innovation to protect animal performance in a world of increasingly complex mycotoxin challenges.

The growing mycotoxin challenge

The problem of mycotoxins is not new, but it is growing more complex each year and remains unavoidable. Produced by fungi such as Fusarium, Aspergillus and Penicillium, mycotoxins contaminate crops during the growing season, at harvest and throughout storage. They are an unavoidable reality of modern agriculture.

Advances in testing technology have revealed just how widespread they are: more than 90% of feed samples worldwide are contaminated, with an average of between 5 and 8 toxins present in every single sample. These toxins are more diverse than ever before, with emerging compounds such as fusaric acid, beauvericin and enniatins increasingly detected alongside the better-known contaminants.

Although some mycotoxins cause dramatic, acute symptoms, the far greater challenge for livestock producers is chronic, low-level exposure. This silent threat undermines animal health in subtle but serious ways. Long-term ingestion of contaminated feed compromises immunity, damages gut integrity, reduces reproductive efficiency and interferes with nutrient absorption. Over time, this hidden burden erodes productivity, weakens performance and leads directly to economic losses. The reality is clear: wherever crops are grown, mycotoxins are present, and complete elimination is impossible. What producers need are effective, smart in-feed solutions critical to protecting livestock and safeguarding the food chain.

Innovative, industry-leading mycotoxin management

Alltech is uniquely positioned to deliver solutions that meet this challenge. Through one of the most extensive mycotoxin-monitoring programmes in the world, we analyse approximately 15,000 feed samples every year, providing unparalleled insight into the global contamination landscape. These findings are interpreted through our proprietary Risk Equivalent Quantity (REQ) model, which translates laboratory data into a practical measure of mycotoxin risk for specific species and production stages. This blend of global surveillance and real-world interpretation ensures that our solutions are always designed with the producer, and their everyday challenges, in mind.

The science behind Mycosorb Evo and Mycosorb A+ Evo is as innovative as it is robust. Building upon proven yeast-based technologies, our research team identified and combined ingredients in a way that delivers unprecedented broad-spectrum activity. Mycosorb Evo integrates functionalised yeast cell wall extract, which provide characterised and effective binding sites, with a novel ingredient, expanding the range of targeted toxins. Mycosorb A+ Evo also incorporates algal components to enhance performance against particularly challenging compounds and further extend the spectrum of adsorption. The results are formulations that not only bind a wide array of toxins, but do so with a level of efficiency and stability that goes beyond conventional compositions.

In vitro research on Mycosorb Evo

Extensive research confirms the effectiveness of this approach. In controlled biochemical in vitro studies, Mycosorb Evo demonstrated a twofold increase in binding capacity for deoxynivalenol (DON), one of the most prevalent Fusarium toxins worldwide. It also showed a threefold improvement in the adsorption of fusaric acid, a toxin that is often overlooked but is increasingly recognised as a contributor to animal health challenges, especially when found in combination with DON.

Beyond these standout results, the formulation consistently delivered strong adsorption rates across the full spectrum of regulated and emerging mycotoxins, including aflatoxins, fumonisins, zearalenone, ochratoxins and ergot alkaloids. The unique combination of components works synergistically, producing a broad-spectrum capacity that exceeds what any individual ingredient could achieve on its own.

Further biological testing in vitro using cell culture models of pig intestinal cells demonstrated that the Mycosorb Evo formulation significantly improved cell viability when challenged with common mycotoxins. In the presence of DON alone, viability improved by an average of 33% with Mycosorb Evo, and when DON was combined with fusaric acid, protection rose to 47% with Mycosorb Evo. These results underscore the capacity of Mycosorb Evo to protect the very first point of contact between toxins and the animal: the intestinal lining.

In vivo trials of Mycosorb Evo

Further validation came through in vivo poultry trials of Mycosorb Evo. Birds consuming naturally contaminated feed containing Fusarium mycotoxins such as DON, fusaric acid and zearalenone demonstrated improved feed conversion ratios, particularly during the critical mid-production stage. Blood biomarker analysis confirmed reductions in systemic mycotoxin levels, while signs of lower immune disruption and reduced intestinal inflammation were also observed alongside the amelioration of the digestive volatile fatty acid production. Taken together, these findings show that Mycosorb Evo does more than bind toxins in a test tube; it protects performance where it matters most, inside the animal.

For producers, the benefits of this breakthrough are significant. Using the REQ assessment, the in vitro data accumulated was further interrogated, demonstrating that the residual toxicological burden associated with multi-mycotoxin contamination could be mitigated by over 50% and up to 75% in the presence of Mycosorb Evo and Mycosorb A+ Evo, according to the types of toxins and animal species considered. This indicates a substantial reduction in mycotoxin potential risk to animal production or health.

Overall, the next-generation patent-pending Mycosorb Evo and Mycosorb A+ Evo formulations represent a significant advancement in in-feed mycotoxin mitigation. The Evo range offers broad-spectrum efficacy, enhanced binding for both regulated and emerging mycotoxins, and flexibility for integration into diverse feed systems, positioning it as the next evolution for improving feed safety and protecting animal performance in mycotoxin-challenged production environments.

A global leader in mycotoxin management

The launch of Mycosorb Evo and Mycosorb A+ Evo demonstrates Alltech’s continued commitment to innovation. We believe that progress in agriculture comes from the intersection of science and practice, and these formulations embody that philosophy. They are the result of decades of research, thousands of global analyses, rigorous laboratory and field validation, and a relentless focus on practical solutions for producers.

The challenge of mycotoxins is not going away. Climate change, global trade and shifting agricultural practices are likely to increase the frequency and complexity of contamination. Producers cannot afford to rely on outdated or limited solutions. What is required is a new generation of technology that not only responds to today’s risks but anticipates tomorrow’s challenges. Mycosorb Evo and Mycosorb A+ Evo deliver exactly that: broad-spectrum efficacy, proven performance and future-ready innovation.

With these patent-pending formulations, Alltech once again raises the standard in feed safety. Producers now have access to a powerful, scientifically validated tool to protect their animals, safeguard their productivity and secure the integrity of the food chain. This is more than a simple product launch. It is the culmination of decades of dedication to solving one of agriculture’s most persistent challenges, and it represents the next evolution in mycotoxin mitigation. It is Mycosorb Evo.
